MHJ.com: What was the first thing you did when you decided enough was enough? Paul A.: The very first thing I did was make a mental plan. What do I need to do to get back in shape and maximize my health so I can be around for my kids. The answers were actually very easy. I needed to get my bicycle ready. I tuned it up and made sure it was ready to ride. The single most important thing to do next was change my eating habits. I had to get into a sensible plan and stick with it. I am not into starving so traditional diets are basically useless and cause more grief later on. The solution for me was the AB's Diet. This method involves eating right, not starving yourself! This is a key component that too many diets miss. You have to eat to lose weight. That coupled with a sensible exercise plan works wonders. You don't need to ride 50 miles a day everyday to get results. MHJ.com: What does your riding plan consist of? Paul A.: My routine involves a good hard ride on Wednesday, a moderate hill climb on Friday, and usually a 40 mile ride on Saturdays or a race depending on the calendar. The racing season is on right now so I have to look for any opening in my schedule to get in a good ride. I don't ride as hard as I can everytime I go out. That is actually counterproductive to gaining high levels of fitness. MHJ.com: How much weight have you lost? Paul A.: Since I made the lifestyle changes we've been discussing in 2005 I have lost 35 lbs and kept it off. I am now at 190 lbs and feel great. One more thing I did we have not talked about was beer. I love beer. Unfortunately beer doesn't allow me to ride at a high level that I do now. So that sacrifice was small but very important. I am now at 190 lbs and feel great. Being a bike racer at the age of 40 is awesome. I can go out with guys a lot younger than me and hang in there with them. MHJ.com: It seems like you just made a few changes and got real results. Paul A.: Absolutely. I was one of those guys that thought being in great shape was for the other guys, I was mentally blocking myself from success. Now I see that all it took was a few small tweaks and victory was just around the corner. MHJ.com: Do you think racing is vital to being in the best shape possible? Paul A.: No, in fact racing is hard on your body. It takes a strong will to get through the pain of a race and recovering properly in the following days is crucial. If I didn't race I could still maintain my weight and be very satisfied with my fitness level just by riding with my friends at a comfortable pace. So in reality you don't need to be highly competitive, you just need to get out and move. MHJ.com: In closing is there anything you'd like to wrap up with? Paul A.: Don't let anything stop you from regaining or maintaining your health. If you have the drive you can find the time to exercise and eat right.
